The different types of whiskies vary in the alcoholic content, quality and grain used. The grains used to produce whisky are barley, rye, corn, wheat and buckwheat. The grains are first germinated and milled to get a mixture. The mixture is fermented using yeast and water. This mixture is distilled to get ethanol and water. Ethanol is an alcohol and is used in all alcoholic beverages. It is the only alcohol used in beverages. Once the alcohol is collected it is stored in wooden barrels. The alcohol reacts with the wood to develop taste and aroma. Whisky is typically aged in charred white oak barrels for 1 - 2 years. Additional ageing does not improve the quality of the whisky.
