What are the different types of whisky and the XO whisky?

There are various types and classes of whisky based on the grain mash used. The different types of whiskies vary in the alcoholic content, quality and grain used. The grains used to produce whisky are barley, rye, corn, wheat and buckwheat.

The grains are first germinated and milled to get a mixture. The mixture is fermented using yeast and water. This mixture is distilled to get ethanol and water. Ethanol is an alcohol and is used in all alcoholic beverages. It is the only alcohol used in beverages.

Once the alcohol is collected it is stored in wooden barrels. The alcohol reacts with the wood to develop taste and aroma. Whisky is typically aged in charred white oak barrels for 1 - 2 years. Additional ageing does not improve the quality of the whisky. The blending process can be done to add more colourings and flavourings. The alcohol is then packed in glass bottles of standard sizes and shapes.

One of the Indian whiskeys is the X&O Barrel whisky. It is a blend of Scotch malts that are matured in American Bourbon barrels and Indian grain spirits. It has a unique balanced taste and a smooth finish. The name XO whisky comes from the modern short-code language where ‘X’ means kisses and ‘O’ means hugs.

Different types of whisky

The main two types of whisky are malt whisky and grain whisky. Malt whisky is made from malted barley and grain whisky is made from any grain other than barley. The other types of whiskies are made by combining these two types.

Straight whiskey

This whisky is made from malted or unmalted cereal grain mash up to a concentration of not more than 80% abv. It is aged in new charred oak barrels for at least 2 years.

Spirit whisky

This whisky is made by mixing neutral spirits and 5% of other stricter categories of whisky.

Blended whisky

This whisky is made by blending different types of whiskies and sometimes neutral grain spirits, flavouring and colouring may be added. One or higher-quality straight or single-malt whiskies are mixed with less expensive spirits to make this whisky. This makes the whisky lower priced though expensive premium versions also exist.

Blended malt whisky

This is a blend of single malt whiskies from different distilleries. It is also called ‘Vatted malt’ or ‘Pure malt’

Cask strength

This whisky is also called ‘Barrel strength’ whisky. It is not diluted after it is aged in the casks. This whisky has an alcoholic percentage of 52%-66% abv. Though this is not the highest proof of whisky.

Bourbon whisky

This whisky is made from grain mash consisting of at least 51% corn. It is aged in charred new oak barrels.
