India has a rich and varied background of textile art. The use of beautiful and different varieties of textiles can be traced back to the Indus valley civilizations. As the textiles have limited life as they are easily perishable and cannot sustain the tests of time the only evidences of fine fabrics and textiles used during the ancient ages are to be noticed in the form of the ancient miniature figures and carvings or paintings etc. The art of the ancient civilizations that set their foot on Indian lands are the only recordsof the fine textile art that was practiced back then.

The Indian textile art is quite complex and has seen the influence of several cultures and civilizations. Hence the intricate Indian textile art is a dynamic and ever evolving form of art. From fine Muslin to dyed and weaved cotton to the weaving of silk, Indian textile have developed over time. Even in the historical records there are several mentions of India’s prominence as a main trader in silk to the western world. Around the 6th century AD, India was full-fledged involved in trade of fine woven silk with the Europeans, Chineseand Arabians.

The dawn of Mughal rule in India bought new advancements in the textile art of India. The Mughal dynasty was well renowned for its flair of luxury and beauty. Hence the Mughal art had a significant impact on the Indian textile art during the era of Mughal rule in India.

Unfortunately with the downfall of the Mughal Empire in India and the rule of British on our lands the indigenous Indian textile crafts was at the verge of perishing as the British were using India as a dumping ground for their comparatively cheaper textiles which were produced in bulk due to the Industrial Revolution in the West.

The Swadeshi Movement is a much echoed term in the struggle for freedom of India where the need for preserving and protecting the Indian crafts and textile art was stressed upon. The interests and livelihood of Indian craftsmen was at stake during British rule in the country.

After the achievement of freedom in 1947 the Indian government launched several programs to restore the traditional intricate art forms of India. Several awareness programmes were also launched to revive the lost talents. Today Indian textile crafts are considered as one of the finest and richest in the world.
